Federal Public Ministry opposes reduction of Whale Franc protected area

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has expressed opposition to a bill that seeks to reduce the Whale Franc Environmental Protection Area (APA) in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The proposed legislation, authored by Federal Deputy Geovânia de Sá, aims to remove approximately 34,000 hectares from the protected zone.

Prosecutor Leandro Mitidieri stated that this reduction could undermine Brazil’s international commitment under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to conserve 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030. The MPF argues that the urgent processing of Bill 849/2025 threatens the integrated protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
