Federal Railroad Administration allocates funding for US rail projects
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has announced significant funding for two distinct railway initiatives in the United States.
A $550 million investment has been allocated to modernize the Raleigh-Richmond S-Line corridor, connecting North Carolina and Virginia. The project aims to overhaul existing tracks, reinforce bridges, and modernize signaling systems. These upgrades are expected to reduce travel times by at least 90 minutes and increase the frequency and reliability of both passenger and freight services. This funding follows a period of setbacks in 2025 when federal appropriations were frozen.
Additionally, the FRA has provided up to $3 million in federal support for the Nevada Northern Railway. This grant, part of the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program, is designated for project development and final design work to reconnect a 127-mile corridor to the national rail network. The funding will cover environmental assessments and engineering studies but does not include direct construction costs.
