Federal Reserve data shows oldest U.S. households hold highest median wealth
New data from the Federal Reserve’s triennial Survey of Consumer Finances reveals that U.S. households led by individuals aged 75 or older now hold the highest median net worth, reaching $504,900 in 2025. This demographic, which represents approximately 13.4% of U.S. families, saw its median wealth grow significantly, driven largely by rising retirement account balances and a strong stock market. The S&P 500 advanced approximately 78% between the end of 2022 and 2025, disproportionately benefiting asset owners.
The report highlights a widening wealth divide. While the wealthiest 10% of American families saw their median net worth increase by 31% to $3.6 million, other segments of the population face financial challenges. For example, debt delinquency rates have risen, with 19.6% of indebted families reporting late loan payments in the preceding year, compared to 12.2% in 2022.
While the oldest age group holds the most wealth, they are the smallest demographic. In contrast, households headed by individuals under 35 constitute the largest group, making up about one in five U.S. families.
