Federal Reserve holds interest rates at 3.75% to 4.00%

The Federal Reserve opted to maintain the federal funds target range at 3.75% to 4.00% following its latest meeting. The decision was reached by a 10 to 2 vote, with Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissenting in favor of a quarter-point increase.

In post-decision remarks, Chair Kevin Warsh noted that while economic activity is expanding at a strong pace, inflation remains elevated. He emphasized that the central bank is committed to returning inflation to its 2% target and will rely on accumulating more data to determine future policy stances. Warsh also announced a plan to reduce the frequency of monetary policy decisions from eight to six meetings per year starting in 2028.

Market participants are now looking toward upcoming economic indicators, including the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, to gauge the trajectory of inflation. Investors are also pricing in the possibility of a further rate hike in December.
