Federal Reserve maintains interest rates amid persistent inflation

The Federal Reserve has decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged, maintaining the target range at 3.75% to 4%. The decision, reached during the October meeting, follows a period of rising inflationary pressures. While the central bank paused rate hikes, the move was not unanimous: Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, both favoring a 25-basis-point increase.

Chairman Kevin Warsh stated that the decision to hold rates allows for the accumulation of more information to ensure a timely return to the 2% inflation target. Warsh emphasized that politics played no role in the decision, despite the meeting occurring shortly before midterm elections. He noted that while economic activity remains strong and domestic spending is resilient, inflation remains elevated.

Market analysts and Wall Street investors continue to monitor future moves, with many anticipating a potential rate hike at the December meeting. In Hong Kong, the decision is expected to have limited impact on the mortgage market, as the 1-month HIBOR has remained below 3% in October and bank funding costs show no immediate pressure.
