US markets react to Treasury buybacks and $40 trillion debt milestone

Global markets are reacting to several major economic developments. The US Treasury Department announced it will at least double its long-term bond buyback operations starting September 9 to support market liquidity. This move follows a period where 30-year Treasury yields reached their highest levels since 2007. Simultaneously, Federal Reserve meeting minutes revealed that many officials consider further monetary tightening necessary if inflation does not continue to decline.

In the United States, the total public debt has surpassed 40 trillion dollars, having grown by 10 trillion dollars in less than five years. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically regarding the Strait of Hormuz, have driven oil prices higher, with Brent crude trading above 91 dollars per barrel. President Donald Trump has asserted US control over the Strait, though he suggested its strategic importance might diminish due to new pipelines and alternative routes.

In Asia, JPMorgan has revised its forecast for the Bank of Japan, predicting a potential interest rate hike in September and another in December, aiming for a 1.5 percent rate by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, in the corporate sector, Moderna shares surged 84 percent following positive clinical trial results for a personalized cancer vaccine developed in partnership with Merck.
