Federal Reserve officials signal potential for further interest rate hikes

Federal Reserve officials have signaled that future monetary policy decisions will depend on economic data and the persistent nature of inflation. Vice Chairman Philip Jefferson noted that inflation has remained high for an extended period, suggesting that the Fed needs time to assess if further interest rate increases are necessary. He highlighted that factors such as rising energy prices, tariffs, and rapid growth in AI investment are impacting the economy.

Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari indicated that additional rate hikes might be required if economic growth remains unusually strong and inflation proves resilient. While Kashkari previously projected a rate increase for 2027, he noted that current policy may not be sufficiently restrictive given the strength of the labor market.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook identified the AI build-out as a significant inflationary risk for 2027. While acknowledging that AI may boost long-term productivity, Cook expressed concern regarding the timing of those disinflationary gains and the potential for new supply bottlenecks. She also noted that geopolitical conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, could further impact supply chains.
