Federal Reserve officials split on inflation outlook and rate policy
Federal Reserve officials expressed diverging views on the trajectory of inflation and the necessity of interest rate adjustments. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack voiced caution, stating she is not convinced that recent signs of slowing inflation will persist and emphasizing the need for the Fed to act now to reach the 2% target.
In contrast, Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee noted that recent inflation readings have improved. Goolsbee expressed hope that as price pressures from tariffs and higher oil prices tied to the Iran conflict fade, inflation could return to the 'golden path' toward the Federal Reserve's 2% target. He described the broader US economy as steady and characterized current headline inflation in the 3% range as too high, but noted that incoming data has been encouraging.
These conflicting perspectives follow mixed economic indicators, including a flat July Producer Price Index for final demand and a greater-than-anticipated increase in core PPI.
