Federal Reserve officials weigh AI's impact on inflation and stability
Federal Reserve officials are examining the economic implications of artificial intelligence, specifically regarding productivity and financial stability. Kevin Warsh announced the creation of a new task force to study the pace and economic impact of general-purpose technologies, including AI, as part of the Fed’s mandate concerning employment and inflation.
Austan Goolsbee, President of the Chicago Federal Reserve, noted that AI-driven data centers present a dual effect: they can boost productivity but may also trigger inflation by overheating the economy and increasing costs for commodities and land.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the massive debt associated with AI data centers. Projections suggest that debt linked to these facilities could exceed mortgage debt by the end of the decade, leading to questions about whether the revenue generated by these centers will provide sufficient liquidity to satisfy creditors.
