Federal Reserve policy decisions drive crypto market volatility and liquidations
The cryptocurrency market experienced significant volatility, with approximately $634 million in positions liquidated over a 24-hour period. Data from CoinGlass indicates that long traders bore the brunt of the losses, accounting for $525 million in liquidations, while short liquidations totaled $109 million. This market flush involved 113,141 traders and occurred as Bitcoin traded near $75,000.
Market uncertainty is being driven by anticipation surrounding the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision. Investors are closely monitoring the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) for guidance, with market tools suggesting a high probability of a rate hike. Analysts have noted that Bitcoin has lost its 50-week exponential moving average, with some suggesting potential further declines toward the $70,000-$72,000 range.
Separately, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York confirmed it will reinvest approximately $15.6 billion from maturing securities over the next three weeks. While some market participants interpreted this as a massive liquidity injection, analysts clarify that reinvesting proceeds from maturing securities does not expand the Fed’s balance sheet in the same manner as quantitative easing. The Fed has also continued a pause on Reserve Management Purchases of Treasury bills through mid-October.
