SBAB forecasts two Riksbank interest rate hikes

SBAB forecasts that the Riksbank will implement two interest rate hikes in the coming months, with the first expected in December and the second in February. This revised timeline follows an unexpectedly low inflation reading in August, which led the bank to delay its previously anticipated November hike.

Robert Boije, chief economist at SBAB, noted that while inflation may rise due to global factors like oil and shipping prices, the Riksbank likely wants to see inflation stay above target for two consecutive months before acting. These hikes are expected to increase variable mortgage rates by approximately 0.5 percentage points by the start of next year, with long-term fixed rates seeing similar increases.

Despite the rising interest rate environment, SBAB predicts housing prices will increase by about four percent during the year, driven by rising household incomes. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Federal Reserve's recent rate hike has impacted markets, including the private equity sector, where higher borrowing costs are complicating company sales and capital returns.
