Federal Reserve rate hike drives Nasdaq record and banking sector interest

The U.S. Federal Reserve raised the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00%, citing robust economic activity and productivity despite persistently high inflation. Following this decision, the Nasdaq Composite reached a new intraday record high, surpassing 27,212.68. Historical data suggests that while rate hikes can increase borrowing costs, they often signal economic resilience; since 1982, the S&P 500 has seen an average 12-month return of 14.9% following rate hikes, compared to 11.2% after rate cuts.

In South Korea, the prospect of prolonged high interest rates is driving expectations for increased profitability in the banking sector. Major financial groups, including Woori, Shinhan, and KB, have seen recent stock price gains. Higher market rates may improve net interest margins (NIM) for these institutions. However, analysts warn that rising corporate delinquency rates and the resulting need for higher loan loss provisions could offset these gains and impact asset quality.
