Federal Reserve report shows 25% decline in Black median net worth
According to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, the inflation-adjusted median net worth of Black non-Hispanic families in the United States fell 25% between 2022 and 2025, dropping from $49,100 to $36,800. This decline reverses previous gains and has widened the racial wealth gap to its largest level since 2016.
In contrast, the median net worth for White non-Hispanic families rose 6% to $332,100, making it nine times the Black median. Other groups saw growth during this period: Hispanic or Latino families' median net worth increased by 18% to $79,600, and Asian families' median net worth rose 16% to $677,600.
While the median wealth for typical Black families decreased, the average Black family net worth rose 5% to $242,400, suggesting that wealth gains were concentrated among higher-income households. Analysts from the Center for Economic and Policy Research noted that declines in the value of homes, vehicles, and retirement accounts likely contributed to the drop in median wealth.
