Federal Reserve signals potential interest rate hikes through 2026

Minutes from the latest Federal Open Market Committee meeting indicate that a majority of officials see the potential for another round of interest rate hikes through 2026 if inflation remains persistent. The Federal Reserve maintains an “open mind,” stating that future decisions will depend entirely on incoming macroeconomic data, such as the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index.

Beyond interest rates, the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet management is also a critical factor in monetary policy. The transition from quantitative easing to quantitative tightening—where the Fed reduces its balance sheet—acts as a secondary form of tightening by withdrawing liquidity from the financial system. This dual approach of raising rates while reducing the balance sheet significantly impacts market liquidity and investor expectations.
