Federal Reserve Vice Chair signals potential delay in interest rate hikes

Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson indicated that the central bank may require more time to evaluate economic data before implementing further interest rate hikes. Speaking at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, Jefferson noted that future policy adjustments should be determined by examining data trends, the evolving economic outlook, and the balance of risks.

Jefferson stated, “My colleagues and I will need to come to our own judgment, which may take more time.” This stance suggests a potential pause in the tightening cycle, as market expectations for an October rate increase have significantly declined. Recent data shows annual inflation, measured by the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, was 3.4% in August, while core PCE rose 3% year-over-year.

While some officials, such as Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson, have suggested modest further tightening may be necessary to reach the 2% inflation target, the prevailing sentiment among several committee members emphasizes the need for continued data accumulation before making further decisions.
