Federal solar tariffs to take effect in December 2026
New federal solar tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 are scheduled to take effect on December 4, 2026. These tariffs target solar modules, specifically affecting the pricing and procurement of solar panels.
The policy stems from a Commerce Department investigation into polysilicon and its derivatives initiated on July 1, 2025, on national security grounds. Because domestic sources account for approximately 5% of the raw silicon cells and wafers used in manufacturing, the majority of these components are currently imported, primarily from China.
For businesses and homeowners in regions such as Texas, the tariffs may impact the costs of commercial solar projects and premium residential systems, though experts suggest the policy may not alter the fundamental viability of solar energy for individual properties.
