Federal University of Bahia faculty implements controversial dress code

The Faculty of Dentistry at the Federal University of Bahia (FOUFBA) has implemented a new dress code affecting students, professors, staff, and patients. The regulations prohibit items such as miniskirts, cropped tops, caps, low-cut clothing, and short shorts within academic and clinical environments.

The policy has sparked significant debate among the student body. Critics have labeled the measure as archaic and sexist, arguing that it disproportionately targets women and limits personal expression in a public university. Some students also noted the impracticality of the rules given the local climate.

Marcel Arriaga, the director of the faculty, defended the decision, stating that the code is not intended to impose moral standards but is a matter of biosafety and protection. He explained that the clinical environment is inherently contaminated and that minimizing skin exposure helps maintain safety. Arriaga also noted that the proposal originated from female leadership within the faculty's Congregation and aims to reduce instances of harassment.
