Federal Way man charged with manslaughter in infant's death
Elijah Jamal Pendleton Brown, a 22-year-old man from Federal Way, faces a second-degree manslaughter charge following the death of his 4-month-old son. Prosecutors allege the infant died of suffocation due to Brown's criminally negligent actions.
According to charging documents, Brown told detectives that he placed the baby in a swaddle with his arms cinched to his sides before placing him face down in a sleeping device and walking away. Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jocelyn Cooney stated that the defendant failed to provide a safe environment, noting that two separate pack and plays were available in the apartment.
The case was filed approximately six months after the incident, a delay prosecutors attribute to waiting for necessary DNA results from the Washington State Toxicology lab. These results reportedly corroborate Brown's statements and confirm the baby was placed on a boppy pillow. Brown is currently held at the King County Correctional Facility with bail set at $450,000 and is scheduled for arraignment on September 9 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center.
