Federation of BiH pension numbers rise amid demographic shifts
Data from the Federal Institute for Pension and Disability Insurance (PIO/MIO) shows that in July, a total of 471,478 pensions were paid out in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an average amount of 753 KM.
Breakdowns by pension type include an average old-age pension of 973 KM for 231,860 recipients, an average disability pension of 733 KM for 45,769 recipients, and an average family pension of 741.91 KM for 102,440 recipients. The number of pensioners is increasing by an average of approximately 2% annually due to demographic shifts and new users entering the system.
The Institute noted that while pension payments are primarily funded by contributions from active insured persons, long-term sustainability depends on employment growth, wage levels, and demographic trends. Since 2020, the Institute has operated under treasury management, with the government serving as a guarantor for pension payments.
