Bosnia and Herzegovina: Pension increases and steelworks worker support

Bosnia and Herzegovina faces significant economic and energy shifts. In the Federation of BiH, pensions will be increased by 3.82 percent, effective from July 1, 2026. These adjusted amounts, including retroactive differences for July, are scheduled for disbursement on Friday, September 4, 2026.

In the industrial sector, the bankruptcy of Nova Željezara Zenica has left 1,100 workers unemployed. Federal Minister Vedran Lakić has proposed a three-part emergency package to support these workers, which includes active job placement assistance, employer subsidies for hiring former staff, and material support combined with requalification programs.

Energy stability remains a concern. Hydroelectric production is highly sensitive to rainfall, with annual economic fluctuations estimated at 210 million euros. Additionally, electricity production in the Federation has seen a decline, and rising costs for pellets, gas, and electricity are impacting the domestic economy.
