Federazione SIGO launches awareness campaign on microplastics and women's health
The Federazione SIGO (Società Italiana di Ginecologia e Ostetricia) has launched an information and awareness campaign to address the impact of microplastics and endocrine disruptors on women's health, fertility, and pregnancy.
Data from the Italian Life Persuaded project, coordinated by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, highlights widespread exposure. The study found phthalate metabolites in 100% of participants and Bisphenol A in 77%. While these findings document the prevalence of exposure, experts note that they do not automatically prove direct health damage.
Medical professionals suggest reducing avoidable exposure by limiting single-use packaging, using reusable containers, and avoiding heating food in plastic. Substances under scrutiny include Bisphenol A, phthalates, and PFAS, which may interfere with hormonal regulation and metabolic processes.
