Federico Cecchetti film explores Antonin Artaud’s journey to Rarámuri lands

Director Federico Cecchetti’s new film, ‘Jíkuri: Viaje al país de los Tarahumaras’, explores the spiritual connection between French poet Antonin Artaud and the Rarámuri people of Mexico. The film reconstructs Artaud’s 1936 journey to the Sierra Tarahumara, where he sought the sacred essence of art through indigenous rituals and the use of the jíkuri (peyote).

Rather than a traditional biography, the film focuses on the sensory experience and the clash between Western modernity and Rarámuri spirituality. It highlights the landscape of the Chihuahua canyons and the dignity of the Rarámuri community. The production was featured in the Guadalajara International Film Festival and is scheduled for release in Mexican theaters on September 17, marking the 90th anniversary of Artaud’s visit to Mexico.
