Federico García Lorca: 90 years since the poet's assassination
The 90th anniversary of the assassination of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca is being marked by calls to reclaim his historical and political legacy.
The political party Nación Andaluza has issued a statement proposing to recover the poet as a figure of the Andalusian people. The party argues that Lorca has been co-opted by various institutions and political entities, seeking instead to highlight his identity as a disruptive, pro-Andalusian, and internationalist figure.
Historical records indicate that Lorca was targeted due to his perceived status as a socialist, Freemason, and homosexual. His work, which denounced the abuses of the Civil Guard and local political bosses, was viewed as dangerous by fascist forces. The commemorations emphasize his defense of Andalusian civilization and his solidarity with other regional identities, such as Catalonia, during the era of the Second Spanish Republic.
