Federico García Lorca: Tributes mark 90 years since his execution

The world marks the 90th anniversary of the execution of Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, who was killed during the Spanish Civil War in August 1936. Various cultural and political tributes are taking place to honor his literary legacy and address the historical memory of his death.

In Madrid, a performance titled ‘Saca Nocturna’ was organized by La Juan Gallery under the ‘Cultura Orgunda’ program, a collaboration between the Ministry of Equality and the Ministry of Culture. The event involved a symbolic procession through the city, where artists carried a sculpture of the poet past landmarks such as the Palacio de Velázquez, the Prado Museum, and the Plaza de Santa Ana to commemorate his life and the victims of the war.

In the political sphere, the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory (ARMH) has called on the Spanish government to declassify documents regarding Lorca’s assassination, arguing that the continued secrecy serves to protect perpetrators and harms the victims. Meanwhile, cultural institutions like RTVE are launching documentaries and cinematic projects to explore his life, his musicality, and the circumstances of his death.
