Federico García Lorca: The legacy of the murdered Spanish poet

Federico García Lorca, the acclaimed Spanish poet and playwright, was murdered by fascists in August 1936. A prominent member of the Generation of ‘27, Lorca was known for his avant-garde works and his commitment to making classical theatre accessible to rural working-class communities through his direction of La Barraca.

His literary legacy includes the “Rural Trilogy”—comprising Blood Wedding, Yerma, and The House of Bernarda Alba—which explored themes of gender roles and class divides. His poetry, such as the celebrated Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads), cemented his status as a major figure in 20th-century literature. His work often incorporated themes of sexual repression and queer desire.

Born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, Lorca’s life and art were deeply connected to the landscapes of Spain and his experiences in New York. Despite his death during the political turmoil of the era, his influence remains a central pillar of Spanish culture.
