Federico García Lorca: Tributes mark 90 years since poet's death
The 90th anniversary of the death of Federico García Lorca, the renowned Spanish poet and playwright, is being marked by various cultural tributes. Lorca, a central figure of the ‘Generation of 1927’, was assassinated in Granada in August 1936.
At the 37th Festival Arte Flamenco in Mont de Marsan, Manuel Liñán opened the event with ‘Llámame Lorca’ (Call Me Lorca), a performance dedicated to the poet’s multifaceted life as a musician, painter, and dramatist. The production features a troupe from Granada performing in attire that references Lorca’s youth.
In Spain, a phenomenon known as ‘Lorcamanía’ describes the enduring influence of the poet across generations. His work continues to inspire contemporary artists, ranging from flamenco legends like Paco de Lucía to modern pop musicians. His image and verses remain prominent symbols of resistance and freedom in social media and public demonstrations.
