Federico Valverde faces tactical shifts at Real Madrid

Real Madrid player Federico Valverde has faced tactical shifts, including being deployed as a wing-back by managers such as Carlo Ancelotti and more recently José Mourinho. While Valverde previously expressed that he was not born to play as a lateral, his recent performance in that role was successful, providing an assist to Diomande during a victory against Villarreal.

José Mourinho clarified that Valverde's use in the defensive line was a specific solution for a particular situation rather than a permanent change. Former Real Madrid players, including Fernando Hierro, Guti, Iván Campo, Rafa Alkorta, and Miguel Torres, have weighed in on the matter. Hierro cautioned that frequent positional changes can impact a player's confidence, whereas Miguel Torres suggested that being utilized in various roles can be a sign of a coach's trust in a player's tactical intelligence and adaptability.
