Federmeccanica President calls for Italian industrial revitalization
Simone Bettini, president of Federmeccanica, has called for a long-term national vision to sustain Italy’s industrial competitiveness. Speaking at the 2026 General Assembly in Bergamo, Bettini emphasized the need for robust industrial policies to support strategic sectors such as steel and automotive.
Regarding the crisis at the former Ilva plant in Taranto, Bettini criticized the lack of political and media attention. He argued that closing the hot area of the plant would result in significant economic loss and wasted public funds on remediation, advocating instead for an industrial project based on sustainability and state-guided intervention.
Bettini also voiced criticism of European ecological transition policies, describing them as lacking pragmatism. In the automotive sector, he called for technological neutrality, suggesting that the transition should evaluate real-world results across electric, hydrogen, and biofuel technologies rather than imposing a single technology on a fixed calendar.
