FedEx launches Life Sciences unit to handle temperature‑sensitive biologics

FedEx has created a dedicated organization, FedEx Life Sciences, to manage the increasingly complex movement of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, biologics, clinical‑trial material and other critical healthcare shipments. The unit builds on recent investments in temperature‑controlled facilities, machine‑learning tracking tools and the IATA CEIV Pharma certification for ground handling.

The move targets the fast‑growing market for GLP‑1 and other injectable biologics that require refrigerated transport. Drugs such as Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound are now widely used for obesity treatment, with about 11 % of Americans taking a GLP‑1 medication. Industry analysts project an 8.3 % compound‑annual growth rate for temperature‑sensitive biologics, reaching a market value of roughly $39 billion in the next seven years.

Nick Gennari, president of Healthcare and Life Sciences at FedEx, said the new unit will provide “certainty, visibility and global reach” for patients and researchers who depend on timely, properly stored shipments.
