Fee‑free travel cards recommended by OCU and First Direct

Consumer groups and banks advise travelers to use fee‑free debit or credit cards to avoid extra costs when paying abroad. The Spanish consumer organization OCU recommends using cards whenever possible for safety, price, versatility and ease of use, while still carrying some cash. It notes that foreign‑exchange fees can reach up to 3 % and cash‑withdrawal fees up to 5 %, adding as much as 8 % to travel expenses.

In the United Kingdom, First Direct offers a debit card with zero overseas transaction and cash‑withdrawal fees, a £250 interest‑free overdraft and a £175 bonus for customers who switch accounts. Other major UK banks such as Lloyds, TSB and Halifax charge up to 2.99 % on foreign card transactions. Several banks provide cards that charge no fees at all and can be set up quickly via mobile apps.

Both sources suggest travelers keep multiple payment options, combine physical cards with mobile payments or prepaid cards, and check their bank’s fee schedule before departure to minimise unexpected costs.
