Barcelona SC faces eligibility dispute in Copa Ecuador

The Copa Ecuador tournament faces regulatory controversy following the round of 16 match between Barcelona SC and Liga de Portoviejo. While Barcelona SC won the match 1-0 on the pitch, their advancement to the quarterfinals is currently under review by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) disciplinary commission.

Liga de Portoviejo has filed a formal complaint alleging the improper use of Erick Mendoza, who previously played for Delfín SC in the same stage of the competition. In response, Barcelona SC has filed a counter-claim regarding the eligibility of player Abdalá Bucaram, arguing his transfer to Liga de Portoviejo did not meet the required 72-hour notification period.

The FEF is expected to reach a resolution within approximately 15 days. Potential outcomes include the loss of the match by 0-3 for one of the clubs or, as some reports suggest, a mere economic fine that would allow the results on the field to stand. Barcelona SC is reportedly citing a 2025 disciplinary precedent where an ineligible player was recognized but no points were stripped to preserve competition stability.
