Guinea-Bissau election delays signaled amid political tension
Authorities in Guinea-Bissau are signaling a potential delay for the general elections originally scheduled for December 6, 2026. Felisberta Moura Vez, vice-president of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), stated that technical conditions are not met to hold the vote on the planned date. This sentiment was echoed by Prime Minister Ilido Vieira Té, who noted that most political parties lack updated leadership and necessary local structures to participate reliably.
The political instability follows a military takeover led by General Horta N’Tam, which ousted former president Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The transition has been marked by constitutional changes and tensions regarding the return of the former leader.
In response, the Senegalese government has expressed deep concern, calling for a consensual and transparent process regarding any changes to the electoral calendar. Senegal, acting in its capacity as a mediator and current president of ECOWAS, has urged the transition authorities to lift restrictions on political and civil activities and to engage in constructive dialogue with political forces and civil society to ensure a peaceful return to constitutional order.
