Ceuta migration crisis sparks calls for royal visit and territorial disputes
Spanish opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo is pressuring Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to authorize a visit by King Felipe VI to Ceuta. Feijóo argues that the monarch, as Head of State and guarantor of territorial integrity, should visit the autonomous city in response to the recent migration crisis, which he characterized as a humanitarian, public health, and public order emergency.
The crisis follows a mass crossing attempt on July 30 and 31, during which more than 70,000 migrants attempted to enter Ceuta from Morocco. Reports indicate that at least 82 people died during these events. Feijóo has also called for a potential sanitary lockdown in Ceuta due to the detection of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis and scabies, among the migrant population.
Simultaneously, diplomatic tensions have risen as Morocco's Justice Minister, Abdellatif Ouahbi, asserted Morocco's historical and geographical claims over Ceuta and Melilla. Ouahbi has called for a dialogue to find a definitive solution regarding the status of these territories and has requested that Spain facilitate the repatriation of all migrants involved in the recent mass crossing.
