Man attacks family with acid‑like liquid in Itabuna, Bahia

On 4 April 2024 a 30‑year‑old man was arrested after dousing three members of a family with a corrosive liquid resembling acid in the California neighbourhood of Itabuna, Bahia. The victims – mother Eliene Soares Souza, her son José Carlos Macedo and husband José Araújo – suffered burns; the mother’s vision in one eye was impaired and she remained hospitalized, while the son stayed in intensive care. The suspect, identified as Juelisson Silvério da Silva, claimed he acted in self‑defence after a bar altercation and feared the family would invade his home. He was taken into custody, presented at a custody hearing the following day and will be charged with intentional bodily injury.

Police reports indicate the attack occurred at the family’s doorstep after the mother left a bar to buy cigarettes. Witnesses described the suspect descending a staircase and spraying the liquid onto the victims. The investigation continues, and the suspect remains detained pending further legal proceedings.
