Feira de Santana ranks as 19th largest urbanized area in Brazil
Feira de Santana has been ranked as the 19th largest urbanized area in Brazil, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The municipality recorded 150.33 km² of urban occupation as of 2022.
In the national ranking, Feira de Santana follows Guarulhos, São Paulo, and precedes Ribeirão Preto, also in São Paulo. The urbanized area represents approximately 11.52% of the municipality's total territorial area of 1,304.425 km². The IBGE study, which utilizes satellite imagery interpretation, distinguishes between dense and low-density urban areas to track physical city expansion.
The study highlights that while the city's status as a regional hub is reinforced by its size, the expansion presents infrastructure challenges, including the need for increased investment in public transport, mobility, sanitation, and drainage.
