Feline health: Essential nutrition and heat management tips

Maintaining feline health requires specialized attention to nutrition and environmental adaptation. Because cats are obligate carnivores, their diet must prioritize high-quality animal proteins. Essential nutrients like taurine, arginine, and other amino acids must be obtained directly from animal tissues to prevent serious issues such as heart disease and vision impairment. A proper diet should ideally consist of 30-40% high-quality protein from sources like poultry, fish, or lamb.

In addition to nutrition, managing heat exposure is critical for feline well-being. Veterinarian Eva Sánchez-Paniagua notes that cats do not express heat discomfort as overtly as dogs or humans. While reduced activity and seeking shade are normal adaptations, owners should watch for warning signs such as lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, or open-mouth breathing, which requires immediate professional attention.

To manage temperature, experts recommend providing access to shade, ventilation, and multiple water stations rather than using forced cooling methods like cold baths or excessive hair trimming, which can disrupt their natural thermoregulation.
