Feline nutrition and the prevention of pet obesity

Overweight and obesity are frequent issues among companion animals globally, according to the World Pet Obesity Association (WPOA). For cats, maintaining a healthy body condition depends on diet, portion control, and physical activity.

As strict carnivores, cats have specific nutritional requirements that differ from dogs. Veterinarian Camila Olivares from Virbac Chile explains that cats primarily obtain energy from proteins, specifically animal-based proteins, which provide essential amino acids.

An effective nutritional approach for felines involves a High Protein – Low Carbohydrate (HP-LC) focus. This method prioritizes animal proteins while maintaining controlled levels of fats, carbohydrates, and fiber. Nutritional needs change throughout a cat's life based on age, activity levels, and body condition, requiring periodic evaluations and dietary adjustments.
