Felipe Calderón statue decapitated at Los Pinos during protest

A statue of former Mexican President Felipe Calderón was decapitated at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex following a protest by former employees of the state-owned utility Luz y Fuerza del Centro. The protesters were demonstrating against the dissolution of the company during Calderón’s administration.

Calderón stated that the incident reflects a growing climate of violence and intolerance toward opposing political views in Mexico, suggesting the country is losing its democratic character. The Mexican Electricians Union (SME) has denied involvement, claiming the damage was caused by individuals unaffiliated with the organization.

Lawyer Roberto Gil Zuarth has filed a criminal complaint with the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), seeking the arrest of those responsible and investigating whether officials failed in their duty to protect the national monument. President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the vandalism and the manner in which protesters entered the complex, though she acknowledged the underlying discontent regarding the utility's extinction.
