Felipe Calderón warns of 'perfect dictatorship' as protesters vandalize his statue

Former Mexican President Felipe Calderón sparked political tension during the Foro América Libre by accusing the ruling Morena party of attempting to establish a 'perfect dictatorship.' He claimed the administration is using its democratic legitimacy to dismantle institutional checks and balances, specifically citing the judicial reform as a means to eliminate independent members of the judiciary. Calderón also raised concerns regarding a permanent 5 percent public deficit and the high rate of political violence, noting over 49 candidate assassinations in 2024.

Following his speech, protesters—identified as former employees of the defunct Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC) and members of the Mexican Electricians Union (SME)—targeted a bronze statue of Calderón at the Los Pinos Cultural Center. The demonstrators decapitated the sculpture and removed its commemorative plaque. The protest was rooted in long-standing grievances regarding the 2009 extinction of LyFC, which left tens of thousands of workers unemployed.

President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the vandalism and the unauthorized entry into Los Pinos, stating that while she understands the historical anger regarding the dissolution of LyFC, violence cannot be justified. The SME has since distanced itself from the specific acts of vandalism, claiming the perpetrators were outsiders. Meanwhile, Morena representatives criticized the forum as an attempt by the conservative right to roll back social rights and progress.
