Felipe Carrillo Puerto communities face cyclone risks

Approximately 4,000 residents across 40 communities in Felipe Carrillo Puerto are facing heightened vulnerability to tropical cyclones and heavy rains. The primary concerns involve deteriorating road infrastructure and a lack of sufficient anti-cyclone shelters.

In coastal fishing communities such as Punta Herrero and María Elena, a 60-kilometer stretch of road connecting the municipal seat to the coast becomes nearly impassable during rainy periods. This isolation threatens both emergency evacuations and local economies, specifically fishing and community tourism, which include bird watching and boat tours.

In the Maya zone, communities including Xhazil Sur, San Andrés, and Mixtequilla face significant risks from flooding due to their low-lying geography. Residents report that the combination of poor access routes and inadequate shelter makes it difficult to protect lives and property during weather emergencies.
