Felipe Massa legal battle against F1 and FIA set for 2027 hearing

Former Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa is pursuing a £64 million (approximately €76 million) damages claim against Formula 1, the FIA, and former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone. The lawsuit stems from the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, an incident known as ‘Crashgate,’ where a deliberate crash allegedly influenced the race outcome and cost Massa the world championship.

Massa has shifted his focus from attempting to overturn the 2008 championship results to seeking financial compensation for lost earnings. While a High Court judge previously dismissed three of his four claims, the legal proceedings were allowed to continue on the grounds of an ‘unlawful conspiracy’ charge.

In response, lawyers for Ecclestone, F1, and the FIA filed an appeal to prevent a full trial and dismiss the conspiracy allegation. The UK Supreme Court has scheduled the appeal hearing for February 2 and 3, 2027, which will determine if the case proceeds to a full trial.
