Felix Banaszak advocates for positive concept of home within Green Party

Felix Banaszak, leader of the German Green Party, is calling for the party to adopt a more positive and emotional concept of “Heimat” (home/homeland). Banaszak stated that taking the sense of home away from people deprives them of much, and argued that the Greens must offer emotional belonging rather than just a programmatic catalog.

Banaszak noted that he previously viewed the term critically but has since changed his perspective. He cited philosopher Michael Sandel, suggesting it was a mistake for the left to leave patriotism to the right. He also linked deindustrialization to the rise of anti-democratic politics, as the loss of jobs often results in a loss of identity and stability.

Former Green Party leader Ricarda Lang supported this sentiment, noting that the AfD’s concept of love for the homeland resonates in eastern Germany because it addresses a sense of loss. Lang suggested that modern liberalism has provided material security but has often stripped away belonging and roots, a void that is currently being filled almost exclusively by right-wing movements.
