Felix Baumgartner breaks sound barrier in stratospheric jump

On October 14, 2012, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner completed the Red Bull Stratos mission, jumping from a pressurized capsule at an altitude of 38,969.4 meters.

During his 9-minute and 9-second descent, Baumgartner became the first human to break the sound barrier in freefall, reaching a maximum velocity of 1,368 km/h (Mach 1.25). The feat required six years of planning and specialized training to survive the extreme conditions of the stratosphere, including temperatures of -68 degrees Celsius and the Armstrong Limit.

To prevent bodily fluids from boiling due to low atmospheric pressure, Baumgartner utilized a specialized multi-layered pressure suit designed by the David Clark Company, a manufacturer of equipment for NASA astronauts.
