Felix Klein criticizes Israeli settlement policy

Felix Klein, Germany’s outgoing antisemitism commissioner, has criticized Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank, describing it as “völkerrechtswidrig” (contrary to international law). Speaking to the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”, Klein stated that these policies move away from the necessary two-state solution and urged the Israeli government to utilize diplomacy rather than relying solely on force.

Klein specifically highlighted the “often lax treatment of settler violence against Palestinian families in the West Bank,” calling for the Israeli judiciary to pursue these incidents more strictly. He noted that since the October 7, 2023, attacks, tensions in the region have escalated, with over 1,000 Palestinians and dozens of Israelis killed in clashes.

While criticizing Israeli policy, Klein warned against criticism that crosses into antisemitism, such as demonizing Israel or questioning its right to exist. Regarding allegations of genocide in Gaza, he noted the matter is currently before the International Court of Justice and stated he would view blanket accusations of genocide as antisemitic until the court rules otherwise.

In a separate context regarding domestic policy, Klein advocated for stricter criminal laws to combat antisemitism, suggesting that individuals who express support for terrorist organizations like Hamas should face imprisonment and potential deportation if they are foreign nationals.
