FEMA releases $6.6 million for California wildfire recovery

FEMA has released $6.6 million in previously approved funding to support the Disaster Case Management Program for survivors of the January 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires in Southern California. The release of these funds, which represent the second and third installments of an original award, follows intense pressure from California lawmakers to prevent the program from expiring on September 30.

Without this funding, the initiative would have terminated more than a year ahead of its planned 24-month duration, potentially leaving thousands of residents without dedicated caseworkers and resulting in the loss of over 100 jobs. The program is designed to help displaced households navigate complex recovery processes, including securing temporary housing, filing insurance claims, and applying for Small Business Administration loans.

While the release averts an immediate shutdown, a fourth installment of approximately $3.3 million remains pending. Additionally, California officials have requested supplementary long-term disaster recovery allocations for infrastructure, schools, and small businesses that have yet to be approved by federal officials.
