Female farmer calls for agricultural support in Hakkari

At a farmers' meeting in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari, female farmer Esma Sırma highlighted the heavy burden women carry in the agriculture and livestock sectors of Eastern Anatolia. Speaking at an event attended by Türkiye Ziraat Odaları Birliği (TZOB) President Şemsi Bayraktar, Sırma noted that while men occupied the meeting seats, women were away performing essential labor such as milking sheep and tending to gardens.

Sırma emphasized the lack of basic infrastructure for female workers, specifically citing a shortage of resting areas and water access for both people and livestock. She called upon the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and TZOB leadership to support the region's agricultural potential. Additionally, she requested the establishment of cooperative-supported marketplaces to allow women to sell their handmade agricultural and artisanal products directly to consumers.
