FEMATRO warns of potential public transport fare increases in Mozambique

Public transport fares in the Greater Maputo region may increase as negotiations between the Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations (FEMATRO) and the government reach an impasse. The dispute stems from the government's failure to fulfill agreements regarding financial compensation intended to mitigate high fuel costs.

Transport operators are currently divided on the scale of the potential increase. Some operators are willing to accept a 5 metical increase provided that state subsidies are maintained. Others support FEMATRO’s original proposal for a 20 metical increase to cover rising operational costs.

FEMATRO has scheduled meetings for late October to reach a definitive position and announce the measures the sector will adopt. While there was a previous risk of service strikes, the federation has appealed for the continuity of activities while dialogue continues with the Executive and the Metropolitan Transport Agency.
