Femicide in Drama, Greece prompts call for societal change

In Drama, Greece, a woman was killed by her husband, who later took his own life, leaving two children behind. The incident was reported on 18 June 2026.

Dr. Aglaia (Lía) Rogganká, director of Trikala General Hospital and a medical school lecturer, wrote that the case was not a "family tragedy" but a femicide. She noted the repeated local reactions such as «σοκ στην τοπική κοινωνία», «κανείς δεν περίμενε κάτι τέτοιο», «ήταν ένα ήσυχο ζευγάρι» and «πέρναγε δύσκολη περίοδο», emphasizing that the murder stemmed from the perpetrator’s belief that he had ownership over his wife's life.

Rogganká argued that femicide is an extreme form of gender‑based violence rooted in control, intimidation and societal tolerance of abuse. She called for a shift in education to teach respect for human dignity, gender equality and non‑possessive relationships, stating that only through such cultural change can future generations be protected from similar acts.
