Feminism in Africa faces challenges amid global rights regression

Reflecting on the legacy of Awa Thiam’s 1978 work, ‘La Parole aux négresses’, recent discussions highlight the evolving and often divisive nature of feminism in West Africa. The discourse emphasizes the struggle to transform societies and break cycles of systemic suffering that deprive women and girls of fundamental rights.

According to a 2024 UN Women report marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, nearly a quarter of governments worldwide are reporting a regression in women's rights rather than stagnation. This trend of retreating rights is noted as a significant challenge affecting the African continent.
