FENALCO supports bill to eliminate Colombia's healthy tax

The National Federation of Merchants (FENALCO) has expressed support for a legislative project aimed at eliminating taxes on sugary drinks and ultra-processed products in Colombia. The initiative, introduced by Representatives Daniel Briceño and Carol Borda, argues that the current 'healthy tax' has failed to change consumption habits and has instead placed an undue economic burden on small retailers.

FENALCO president Jaime Alberto Cabal stated that shopkeepers have reported a 25.4% drop in sales and a 47.27% decrease in profit margins due to the levies. The federation noted that 94% of these small shops operate in lower-income socioeconomic strata, meaning the tax disproportionately affects both small business owners and low-income consumers by increasing the cost of basic goods like snacks and juices.
